Under-Eye Circles, Concealers or Correctors Which to Use?

staging-258627_150Which is better for under-eye circles and blemishes, a Concealer or a Corrector? In reality this question is not quite fair, as Concealers and Correctors do different jobs.

Concealers from their name CONCEAL. If you want to cover blemishes, scars, varying pigmentations on the skin, concealers are the way to go. Correctors on the other hand balance out unwanted undertones within the skin; in other words they NEUTRALISE = CORRECT the area.

Correctors

A corrector can be used to either brighten or neutralise light shadowing and discolouration on the face, by using the complementary correctors. Understanding Colour Theory can make a huge difference on how you match and apply your makeup;

There are 3 Primary Colours – Red, Blue and Yellow

Then you have

3 Secondary Colours

(These are made by combing 2 Primary Colours: Primary Colour + Primary Colour = Secondary Colour)

  1. Red + Blue = Purple/Violet
  2. Blue + Yellow = Green
  3. Red + Yellow = Orange

Commonly seen Correctors are the Secondary colours, and work by adding the complementary colour to the required area??? Confused – don’t worry basically it means Colours OPPOSITE each other in the Colour Wheel will Complement each other. Have a look at the colour wheel below:

Yellow and Purple COMPLEMENTS each other – Think of traditional Easter decoration colours.rose-266785_150

Red and Green COMPLEMENT each other – Think of a Red Rose with it Green Leaves.

Knowing the 3 main Complementary colours above will make it much easier to decide which corrector to use, as most correctors will either be Yellow, Green or Orange (high-end brands will go deeper into the colour theory wheel providing peach/salmon correctors).

Which Colour Corrector to Use?

  • Yellow Correctors are used to Correct Purple Undertones within the skin e.g. Veins and Dark-Under Eye Circles predominate in Lighter skin.
  • Orange Correctors are used to Correct Blue Undertones within the skin, e.g. Veins, and Dark-Under Eye Circles predominate in Darker Skin.
  • Green Correctors are used to Correct Red Undertones within the skin.

This same principle can be used in customising your outfit, a Green Dress would be complemented by Red accessories, or a Yellow eyeshadow would complement a Purple eyeshadow, it’s amazing how Colour Theory plays a huge part in todays Makeup and Fashion.

These are going to be one or two shades lighter than your Skin Colour, and are used for HIDING/CONCEALING marks  their primary purpose is to cover-up. Applying a Corrector first will allow you to use less Concealer if you do not want your makeup to feel too heavy. Always remember to set you Concealer with a powder, or it’s going to slip off throughout the day.

Which to Use?

Correctors CORRECT / NEUTRALISE providing a clearer canvas whilst Concealers CONCEAL,  you wouldn’t use a Corrector to hide a scar, it just wouldn’t work; that is the job of a Concealer. Remember one conceals and one corrects. You can use one or both, it really depends on the look you’re trying to achieve and if you’re going for a heavy or lighter look.

I hope this has been helpful, do leave any questions you may have below, x
